Hard set up

I got this for the rear on my cross bike that I converted to gravel. The tread is great and the same as the Race that I’ve been running for a while. I got this because of the smaller size hopefully won’t run the frame as it flexes but isn’t significantly smaller than the 38’s. The tire seems well made and the Kevlar band will be nice in Utah, USA with all the thorns we get here, but installation was a joke. The Kevlar band barely fits around the rim, the tubes I was running aren’t enough. Right now I just have an old tube from my road bike to try and stretch out the tire so I can install a proper sized tube. So far no luck. I’d recommend the Race over the Pro most definitely but this isn’t a bad tire if you have some super tire levers, great hand strength and a lot of patience. A puncture on the trail would be my worst nightmare, so I plan to run sealant in the tube.

Less Than You Think

The Challenge Grinder Race 700x38c is a very good dirt road tire. However the actual width between lugs after a couple hundred miles is only 35 mm on 23 mm H+SON TB14 rims. Really wanted a larger 38 mm tire. They do hold up well and have low rolling resistance. Tried the Challenge Grinder Pro 700x36c tire but the kevlar bead diameter is way to small to get on with out putting the tire in a clothes dryer for a half hour to stretch it and even then I ruined three tubes with tire irons getting the tire on the rim. So recommend the Race over the Pro.
